I got that you're all BIG into bodyweight exercising, but do any of you play around with dumbbells? Kettlebells? Get under the bar from time to time???

Did the men on the "Barbarian Team" truly create their impressive physiques solely through bodyweight routines?

Also.. If none of you sub in a little DB lifting for additional strength, what do you find to be the best investments in order to increase the intensity of BW exercises? I have a 10# weighted vest and some 3-5# ankle weights, and occasionally I will fill my backpack with dumbbells...

And what is with the lack of leg exercises among you guys??? Hint: the chicks dig a nice toosh, get squatting you pansys! ;-)

I play around with kettlebells, however I don't do routine swinging, but I do snatch for volume. Personally, every role a dumbbell could fill, a kettlebell fills better. Best investments? Building the Gymnastic Body by Coach Sommers. Also, Convict Conditioning and The Naked Warrior from Paul Wade and Pavel, respectively. I don't think you truly need to use additional weight until you are able to handle your body in situations where the leverage is stacked against you in the extreme. I think most people do leg exercises, but they just don't post it in their workouts. I know LBM is a big fan of weighted lunges and a couple other people are on a steady diet of high volume pistol routines. Personal fav is weighted step ups.

As far as the bar core team goes, I think all of them created their impressive physiques after hitting the bars. I think a couple of them were really big into hitting the gym and weight lifting, but then converted to the bar and haven't gone back.

The barbarians are 100% bodyweight as far as I'm aware of. There's tons of ways to increase resistance for bw exercises. To increase intensity for example, for pushups, you could wear weighted vest/backpacks, do decline pushups, or use a resistance band around your torso. Another way to increase intensity is to do circuits with no rest or take less rest with each set. Also, I wouldn't say there is a lack of leg exercises among us. Most of us do train legs, we just enjoy focusing our attention on the upper body exercises such as push ups and pull ups because there are more variations to it. At least that's my way of thinking.

I agree. Leg exercises revolve around squatting up and down and utilizing the three main joints. Not much variation beyond weighting yourself or explosive movements if you want to be effective.

and leg workouts are boring.. i for example do sprints and bmx+mountain biking.. but i dont really need much because my legs have been big since i started walking. if i didnt do anything for them i could still squat about 200kilo or deadlift about 300+
upper body is more fun.. and yeah for higher intensity add weight.. do a harder variation for an excercise.. eg. one hand pushups, as mentioned decline pushups.. handstand pushups.. tucked planche.. for pulliing, um.. one handed pullups(assisted/negatives).. etc etc.. front levers.. muscle ups..
calisthenics is pretty adjustable.. more so then dbells or barbells.. if all else fails, have a kid sit on ure back and do pushups.
i done weightlifting.. i got buff.. but i was like a bodybuilder and it was retarded if u ask me. calisthenics make u big quite effectively. and only your bodyweight is good enough to build a perfect physique.
good luck. and ask around, people here are happy to help Smile

Thanks for the replies! I wish I could get me some kettlebells... They're very aggressive little things... Quite expensive for me right now though, I've already been set WAY back in an attempt to get an ACSM certification... Who ever thought it would cost so much to be a personal trainer! Damn, damn, damn...

I know somebody who's doing the Convict Conditioning and said he loves it. If you had to choose one of those books to be the most beneficial, which would it be??? My goals are somewhat non-specific, except that I'd like to continuously build upon my chin and pull-ups. The negatives helped A LOT. It is always so exciting when you accomplish something new!! :-)

My mother made a goal to herself that she'd be able to do her age in push-ups every single year. I thought that was quite daring of her... I think she's a few off of her age now, at 47. We Polish people are BUILT! ;-)

I also think it would be SUPER badass if I could do some of the stunts the guys do on the bars... I tried to YouTube a chick doing them, and couldn't really come up with anything good. Even chicks doing parkour aren't nearly as nasty as the men. I speculated that perhaps this was because men naturally have more muscle mass, and therefore able to lift more, but shouldn't it all be proportionate when dealing with bodyweight??? Personally, I would be psyched if I could do a handstand push-up... s**t, even one...

My workouts are mainly based around a lot of bodyweight HIIT routines, so I think it will especially hard for me to slooow this down by giving more time for recovery between sets and REALLY stressing some muscle fiber breakdown. Sound good?

... You guys think leg workouts are boring??? I find them much more enjoyable than upper body. I like pushing to my MAXIMUM, which is best achieved when I'm doing lower body since I can do more reps before I'm toast. I remember one day I did 3 sets until failure on weighted walking lunges, one-legged squats, one-legged hip extensions, weighted step-ups, and box jumps. My a$$ was sore for THREE DAYS! I was thoroughly impressed. I was considering doing a similiar routine for my upper body tomorrow at the playground, but my arms just fatigue SO much quicker than my legs (I'm a sprinter and a plyo-enthusiast, so this is where I harbor most of my power...), so I think it might be more beneficial for me to split the sets with more reasonable numbers. Yea???

HIIT is not very effective if you're looking to gain raw strength. Sure it helps with cardiovascular conditioning and endurance, but if you want to gain the ability to do a handstand pushup, using a HIIT themed style workout isn't going to get you there faster than taking a relatively long amount of rest time between sets (40 seconds to a minute and a half rest).

On the topic of a girl who does some crazy s**t, I think Calisthenic kings and Hitman got a girl on the squad, I can't remember. Find Hitman's youtube channel and look at his videos, I know there are two with this girl in it.

As men are prone to growth in their upper bodies, women are prone to excessive strength gain in their lower bodies. Due to the nature of childbirth, women's hips open up naturally in a position that is extremely benefical to strength training. In fact, for every man's record in lower body lifting, a smaller, less heavy women has an equally impressive record.

As far as muscle mass and strength goes, their is some correlation between the amount of mass and strength, but realistically, their are always exceptions to the generally accepted beliefs. In fact, as Pavel says, it's all about the central nervous system. If you train your body to use more % of the muscle's power and you train your ligaments and tendons and joints to be able to take more punishment from exerting more of that power, you can become vastly stronger than people twice your size! If I was going to suggest one book, I would suggest Coach Sommers book. I've memorized both books completely and from an avid reader of bodyweight exercises I would suggest both of them! But if you only had enough money to buy one, I would go with Coach Sommers book. He's much more technical about his training and his explanations for exercises. Paul Wade is more like, this will make you strong, trust me, I've seen it, I've done it, you need to trust me : )

If you want to increase pullup volume, then grease the groove. If you can only do negatives, do as many negatives as you can before you feel even close to failure. As Zakaveli says, if you can't make your last rep look like your first rep, don't do it. Do that as many times as you can as often as you can when you're feeling as fresh as possible. That may sound complicated, but split your workout over the day, and do a large amount of sets, up to even 25. That will take your stamina through the roof.

I agree, I don't do HIIT workouts to necessarily build strength... I like to think they keep me lean, for under 20 minutes a day, 2-3 times a week! ;-) Sounds like a sweetass deal to me, but not if I'm focusing on STRENGTH gains... HIIT workouts are also wildly time-efficient, they can pack a pretty big bang for such a little time investment. I also just LOVE to sprint, the raw power you've got to muster up for that sort of intense activity is EXCITING!

I didn't see any chicks, but those guys look rather intimidating.

Isn't it hilarious seeing those tiny little things throw around all that weight??? I roll my eyes at the fat girls on the treadmills complaining that they can't do the weight lifting thing because GOD FORBID they will get BULKY!!! Ignorance kills...

So.. Wait a minute, Pavel reccomends going until failure? I've heard mixed things. Especially depending on your rest days. I have trouble having rest days, but I've been getting better. I often wake up in the morning and say... What will I do today??? I just know that the CNS can only take so much exhaustion...

Does the Coach Sommers book organize a workout routine? Do you need anything other than a bar and rings to do the workouts he prescribes?

I've been trying to grease-the-groove, but it's sort of inconvenient when the pull-up bar (when we had one that is...) was setup in the basement. Since I have incidently broke it last week, I am trying hard to convince mother to invest in the Iron Gym so I can move it around to a better location without the tedious work of unscrewing and screwing a metal bar. My Iron Gym is back home in Florida, wish I had taken it with me because it is by far the best investment I've made for my fitness! (And my workout gloves, of course.) ;-)

Pavel recommends NEVER going to failure, always 1 or 2 reps before it actually.

Most of the guys you meet here never rest, and if they do rest, it's usually Sunday or one of the weekend days. I never rest as well. I stick to greasing the groove for every exercise I perform, so I work out regularly 2 or 3 times a day for a substantial amount of time. Only rest if you're extremely sore or injury prone. If you feel injury prone then obviously you need some time off, but usually sticking to that mantra, as often as possible as fresh as possible, you never feel injury prone or sore, which is the case with what I do. There is routines listed in Coach Sommers books, and all you need is a pair of rings and a pull up bar, although he recommends some other items that you can find in a park or you can buy, although they are probably quite expensive, so I'd go for the park (parallel bars, etc).

Never heard anything about CNS collapsing.
