| I'm interested in this as well. I'm getting back to some cardio but it's really not my favorite. I'm just doing sprints once or twice a week. Hitting the bar IA good cardio too though so conventional cardio to me is secondary. |

You probably don't need it. An eight week program of interval training (running, calisthenics, swimming, bicycling, whatever gets your heart rate up and gives you time to rest) can get you up to a very good general conditioning level with three times a week at 30 minutes. According to Dr. Edward L. Fox, Dr. Donald K. Mathews, and Jeffrey N. Bairstow doing the 8 week I.T. program will get you where you're probably looking to be and then to maintain just do a 16 week 1 day a week program for that.
For someone your age they're saying to get to a working heart rate of 190 and then get back down to a heart rate of 150 for your rest. The duration of each period depends on your goals and which energy system you want to improve. If it's the ATP-PC system, the lactic acid system, or the oxygen (aerobic) system they'll be different. ATP-PC is a work duration of anything under 30 seconds, lactic acid anaerobic is 30-90 seconds work, lactic acid/oxygen aerobic is 90 seconds to 3 minutes and just aerobic is any period over 3 minutes. If you're training your lactic acid system, you should use a work relief which would be something like a slow jog or brisk walk. If you're not, it's better to do a rest relief which is a slow walk. If the work duration is anywhere from 0-90 seconds the relief period should be 2-3 times the work duration. If it's 90 and above it should be 1-2 times the duration. If it's 3 or over 1 or less. The point is just to get your muscles ready for another round of the exact same intensity for the exact same duration. If it's not taking you as long as the recommendations to get to your resting heart rate (150 for you), then you're not pushing yourself hard enough. I think everyone on this forum would have the opposite problem though, haha. |

| I still like to throw in a set of sprints though I think I undermine my legs in my training and I want to be a more complete athlete. |

| I guess it depends on what you consider "cardio". I don't know whether they do cardio. I've never seen or heard of them working legs either. The higher rep stuff(push ups, dips, etc.) are like cardio for them I guess.
I'm trying to make my routine more well-rounded at the moment. I'm doing some high volume deadlifting and that elicits a cardiovascular effect. I'm getting into POSE running as well(short distances). Sprints are quick and effective as well. I say it's best to work everything because it makes you well-rounded. Focus on what you like, but you still have certain obligations to work the whole body. |
